ABOUT ACTIVE MEDITATIONS

For many, it can be extremely difficult to watch the mind in silent sitting when most of our day is consumed with activities, work and so much stimulus. Though we may sit silently with eyes closed, the mind is usually hyperactive behind our peaceful demeanor. Active meditation methods utilise movement and/or sound to first concentrate the mind and then bring internal awareness through observation of the body, sound vibrations and ultimately inner sensations. By taking an indirect approach to meditation through conscious ‘doing’, emotions can be released, energy can be moved, and we can eventually come to a natural place of ‘non-doing’. These techniques (Osho Active Meditations) are suitable for beginners or advanced practitioners. Below are some of the methods we practice at Satsanga.

WHEN DO WE GATHER?

Weekly Tuesday Evening Meditations:

The corner stone of Satsanga is our weekly gathering on Tuesday evenings in our Boon Keng home residence to explore active meditations together. We have been convening every Tuesday since 2009, practicing a variety of active meditations using movement and/or sound to bring us into a state of awareness. These methods are easy to learn, open to all experience levels and extremely profound for giving a taste of meditation, introducing a conscious level of awareness, reducing stress and directing one towards a place of internal witnessing.

The methods are described below and primarily consist of Nadabrahma, Chakra Sounds, Devavani, Gourishankar, Mahamudra and occasionally Kundalini Dance Meditation. The techniques are introduced prior to practicing and are facilitated by various members of Satsanga who have completed the Practice Certification in Active Meditation Facilitation. All are welcome. We do not announce which technique we are practicing before hand, but it will be one of the gentle sound or movement methods.

Monthly: Osho Dynamic Meditation

We love to practice this cathartic method (described below) at least once monthly. Additionally, we aim to offer 21-day series of this technique once per year. Dynamic Meditation is an incredibly profound method to release stagnant energy, clear blocked & repressed emotions, trauma and stress, so as to enter into inner silence more easily. We practice this method at a studio rented in Singapore. Please see the calendar and homepage for the next upcoming sessions. You can read below for a description.

WHAT DO WE PRACTICE?

Sound Meditations

Nadabrahma Meditation – This meditation technique was developed by Osho and inspired from the Tibetan Buddhist methodology of using low sound vibrations to access consciousness. Nadabrahma meditation uses humming sound vibrations to create a healing and aligning effect throughout the body/mind, as well as uses hand movements to balance masculine and feminine energies through visualisations of giving and receiving. This meditation method is very gentle, easy to learn and extremely effective at offering an opportunity to centre oneself into wholeness. Suitable for beginners or advanced practitioners!

Chakra Sounds Meditation - This beautiful sound meditation uses English vowel sounds chanted at each energy centre along the spine.  When performed in a group, this method is extraordinary. Participants remain seated throughout the duration and the technique is wonderful for absolute beginners or advanced practitioners.

Devavani Meditation – This method from Osho is an amazingly delicate & calming technique. Devavani (Divine Voice) uses one’s own sounds to make gentle non-language speech (latihan), as well as free movememnt of the body and silence to reach an inner state of awareness. The method is very quiet, offers a beautiful balance of sound and silence, stillness & silence. Devavani needs a quiet environment to be appreciated fully.

Movement Meditations

Mahamudra Meditation – This is a beautiful movement meditation developed by Osho, meaning ‘The Great Gesture”. Using our body as a medium to communicate to the Divine Essence, we create free flowing gestures of the physical body as a communion to Existence, offering our love & gratitude for this miracle of life. This moving meditation follows in the tradition of Bhakti Yoga in that every movement becomes an offering to Love and a mindful way of entering a deep state of Awareness. Complete with receptivity, gratitude, openness, gentleness & humility, this technique brings the practitioner into the silent depths of the heart. The effect on the physical & energetic bodies is one of harmony, surrender & love. Anyone can practice this technique and will surely find that the heart is more open after such a delicate journey inwards.

Sufi Dance Meditation (No-Dimension) – This is a powerful active meditation inspired by Osho and based on the heart-centered Sufi tradition, which uniquely uses repetitive dance & whirling to bring awareness to our hara (centre). So often we are pulled into the cyclone of impermanence, misidentification, circular thoughts and runaway emotions; this technique empowers us through dance to find the centre of the cyclone and to rest in a place of witnessing, untouched and unaffected by the peripheral storm. What better place to practice this technique than at a vibrant festival! Come and enjoy this dance meditation and let it lead you to your Self. Suitable for beginners or advanced practitioners and modifications are available for those with physical limitations.

Kundalini Dance Meditation – This is a potent active meditation inspired by Osho, that creatively uses shaking, free dance, stillness & silence to bring one into a deep state of awareness. Most of us have realised that repressed emotions and stressful living can affect our ability to calm the mind, to live vibrantly and to relate to others. Osho Active Meditations are scientifically designed to effectively release such tensions that block the natural flow of energies in our body, allowing us to become more joyful, peaceful and authentic. Kundalini Dance Meditation is a wonderful technique that allows us to embody our Inner Shakti and to find ourselves in a pure state of awareness! Come shake off what is no longer serving you, connect to the Kundalini Energy, express yourself fully and drop into a state of pure watchfulness! Suitable for absolute beginners or advanced meditative practitioners. No experience is needed and modifications are available for people who have any physical limitations.

Cathartic Meditations

Chakra Breathing Meditation – This is an intense active meditation inspired by Osho that uses intentional directed breathing, visualisation, stillness & silence to bring one into a deep state of awareness. During one hour, we will use slight movement while standing and active breath to bring awareness to each energy centre along the spine. Chakra Breathing Meditation is a wonderful technique that rebalances & harmonises our energy centres, and allows us to find ourselves in a pure state of awareness! Come breathe yourself into harmony and drop into a state of watchfulness! Suitable for absolute beginners or advanced meditative practitioners and modifications are available for those with physical limitations.

Osho Dynamic Meditation – This is a powerful active meditation developed by Osho, that uses deep breathing, cathartic expression, active mantra, silence and free dance to bring one into a deep state of awareness. Dynamic Meditation is an EXCELLENT opportunity to release old, lingering emotions, de-stress, and have a GREAT catharsis! The depth of this technique is enhanced when practiced in a powerful group energy and the experience is always different. No experience is needed and modifications are available for people who have any physical limitations.

These methods were developed by Osho. You can read more about them, as well as learn specific instructions and purchase music at www.osho.com. Though we practice Osho Active Meditations, this is NOT an Osho Centre. We do not encourage any lineage dependence or guru-dom; however we are grateful to the incredible teachings of Osho.
